Safety is one of the biggest factors when individuals consider buying a new vehicle, so much in fact, many auto companies even create entire ad campaigns based on specific safety features of their cars. And while there are hundreds of new models for sale, only a handful can be considered the best new vehicles for safety. Listed below are five of the safest new vehicles available on the market.

The criteria considered for this list include the number of standard safety features, the number of innovative safety features, as well as recent safety and crash test ratings. This list includes cars and SUVs in the luxury and affordable automobile class.

Audi A4

The Audi A4 has received a 2018 top safety pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. This small-sized luxury sedan features a number of innovative safety features as standard. In its safety test from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Kia Sorento scored the top 'good' rating in crashworthiness on its driver's side, side and moderate overlap front areas. The SUV also scored an excellent rating in its front crash prevention test.

Many won't expect the next vehicle on this list as it is luxury, but it certainly is safe!

Mercedes-Benz GL Class

The Mercedes-Benz GL Class is a full-sized luxury SUV manufactured from 2006 to 2016, when it was renamed the Mercedes-Benz GLS. The Mercedes-Benz GL is notable for having zero deaths from any of its passengers and drivers. As the top of the line Mercedez Benz SUV, the GL came standard with many innovative safety features. Some of the standard safety features of the Mercedez-Benz GL Class include eight airbags, anti-lock brakes, night vision, blind spot monitor, lane departure warning, and lane keeping assist. Also, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety provided the Mercedes-Benz GL Class with a 'good' rating for ease of use of safety features.

The Subaru Legacy is an affordable mid-sized sedan that received an overall five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In safety crash tests, the Legacy received a 'good' rating from the Institute for Highway Safety in Side Impact, Rear Crash Protection, and Roof Strength tests. Innovative safety features found in the Subaru Legacy include EyeSight, driver-assist technology, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking, as well as Lane Departure and Sway Warning. Also, with a starting price of around 22,400 dollars, the Legacy is the more affordable vehicle on this list.
