The Ram 1500 Buying Guide

September 26, 2024

What's New?

In the world of pickups, change does not come quickly. Most truck owners like the tried-and-true methods, so updates from year to year aren’t significant. The center console and technology received an upgrade, and Ram attempted to update the design a little in order to increase its safety rating. The biggest updates came in the special edition model, the Ram 1500 Rebel. The off-road-inspired variant comes only as a crew cab, which is the largest of the four-door configurations available on this model. The two-toned interior has a lot of storage space, and the Rebel has many upgrades available.

Exterior FeaturesFor the Ram 1500, the exterior is like most basic trucks and has a large grill in the front with the company symbol. The 1500 comes in a variety of colors and trim packages, depending on how much money is to be spent. The price ranges anywhere from $27,300 to $53,500. One optional upgrade is the RamBox, which is a unique storage container inside the side of the truck bed. It is getting quite large for a “small” truck, with a 32-inch lift to get into the bed.

Interior FeaturesThe Ram 1500 comes in a two- or four-door model. The seating, for up to 6, is comfortable inside the 1500, which adds to the carlike feel that this model is known for. The cabin is quiet for a pickup, and the Ram hops less over bumps than some, which adds to this carlike feel. The interior customization can make this truck look like the inside of a luxury car, but be prepared to pay a little more for that aesthetic.

TechnologyThe technology is probably the most consistent update for pickups, and Ram is no exception. The center console has an 8-inch screen, and includes Bluetooth, satellite radio, and USB and auxiliary inputs. For a charge, drivers can upgrade to the Uconnect infotainment system, which has been touted as one of the easiest car systems to use.

Engine/Fuel EfficiencyThere are different horsepower options, from the 305-horsepower V-6 to the 395-horsepower Hemi V-8. The turbocharged V-6 EcoDiesel has only 240 horsepower but has the strength to haul while barely breaking a sweat. All options have an eight-speed automatic transmission. This transmission is very smooth and a choice of most luxury automakers. The maximum tow rating is 10,640 pounds, with a maximum payload of 1,890 pounds. The fuel efficiency is incredible for a truck, though drivers get a better stretch with diesel: Anywhere from 13 to 21 mpg city and 18 to 29 mpg highway.

SafetyThe Ram 1500 offers four-wheel drive in addition to just rear-wheel drive. Despite doing some exterior modifications, the Ram 1500 only received a marginally better score for the small-overlap test. It did not receive a good rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. However, it does have dual stage airbags throughout and side impact beams.
