This Rolls-Royce Could Be The Most Expensive New Car Ever

June 7, 2022

The Rolls-Royce automotive brand is no stranger to producing some of the most expensive cars in the world. But for one lucky anonymous car lover, this customized Rolls-Royce Sweptail coupe might be the most expensive new car ever sold. It has reportedly been in the works since 2013, and the buyer reportedly paid a cool 12.8 million dollars for it. Aside from its enormous price tag, the car is also making headlines for having a somewhat strange appearance.

What The Buyer Wants

The buyer of the one-of-a-kind coupe is unknown. According to a press release from Rolls-Royce, he was referred to as “a connoisseur and collector of distinctive, one-off items including super-yachts and private aircraft.” He reportedly asked the car company to make something especially for him that was inspired by the Rolls-Royce cars of the 1920’s and 1930’s. The buyer mainly wanted a coach-built coupe topped with a glass roof, a rear departure angle, and a swept tail.

The Buyer Gets

The now-discontinued two-door Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe features a two-digit British license plant that was created from ingots of aluminum before receiving a hand-polished treatment to give it a mirrored image. With its Golden Age inspired look, the car is a tribute to the short period during the first half of the twentieth century when Europe was not at war. The car was built per the client’s request to include a distinctive panoramic glass roof, which is one of the largest and most complex pieces of glass ever to be put on a car.

Classic, But Modern

The front of the car features a grill bigger than that of any car in the modern era. It was cut from solid aluminum. Just like the license plate, the grill was hand polished to a mirror finish. The car contains a crystal Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament derived from the Rolls-Royce 103EX future concept car. Sleek, clean lines that wrap around the bodywork underneath the vehicle are located on the sides, drawing the eye to the car’s main feature: the swept tailback.

A Lot Of Car For A Lot Of Money

The interior of the car is just as stunning. It is framed by “polished Macassar Ebony and open-pore Paldao” for a fantastic finish like no other. The large hat shelf and glass lip with luggage rails does not leave room for a back seat. Located behind the opening of the doors is a part of carbon fiber panniers with the ability to hide a laptop inside. The car is powered by a 6.75-liter V12 engine and has ample amounts of space in the trunk area for luggage storage.

Reports indicate the car is the most expensive new car ever sold, not including privately sold cars or cars sold at auctions. This sounds about right, considering the price of an average Bugatti Chiron is just under three million dollars. Although Rolls-Royce has not released the official price tag, several reports estimate it to be around the thirteen million dollar range. Giles Taylor, Director of Design at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, said of the mystery buyer, “You might say we cut the cloth for the suit of clothes that he will be judged by.” No one can argue with that.
